Use of the software is subject to the license agreement contained within the installer. Always copy all the contents of the FBI Desktop Detective folder to create distribution copies of the Detector. In this way, you can be sure that the user will receive the Installer and all the supporting files and documentation.
This document describes how to use the Desktop Detective. You may photocopy the information for distribution with the FBI Detector software.

HighWater FBI are the leaders in copyright protection of digital images. Our fingerprinting software allows you to hide a code within an image, so that future users of the image can identify you as the owner.
The Desktop Detective is the most straightforward way to identify FBI fingerprints in images. This standalone utility is easy to use in combination with almost any image display software: for example, you can drag an image from a Netscape window, or copy-and-paste from imaging software such as shareware and freeware packages like GraphicConverter and JPEGView.
If your image display software supports drag and drop, for example Netscape:
• Drag the image from Netscape over the Desktop Detective window, and release the mouse button.
Desktop Detective will search for a fingerprint, decoding what it finds. It will display various status messages as it does so.
Using copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) with any image display software:
• Display an image with your favourite image display software.
• Copy all or part of the image to the clipboard using Command-C.
• In Desktop Detective, paste the image selection from the clipboard with Command-V.
Your image will now be processed.
If your image is a JPEG or a PICT:
There are three other ways to open these files:
• Use drag-and-drop by dragging the image's icon onto Desktop Detective's icon.
• Drop the image onto an open Desktop Detective window.
• You can also open the image from within Desktop Detective, using Command-O.
Note: these methods work if the JPEG image is in grayscale or RGB. If you have a four-colour image, such as a YMCK JPEG, you will need to view it with a compatible display application , and then use the copy-and-paste method described above.
When the Desktop Detective has processed your image:
If a fingerprint is found in your image, the details of the fingerprint found will be displayed. Click the Registry Information button for information about how to locate the owner of the copyright of the image, or see the section below, "Further Information".
Once you have clicked the OK button, the fingerprint information will be summarised in the Desktop Detective window, which will now be ready to process your next image.
Memory requirements:
The Desktop Detective will run with only 1000K of RAM, but it can only process small images (about 500K). We therefore recommend using 7000K for best performance. However, you can adjust the memory allocation of the Desktop Detective by using the standard "Get Info" command from the File menu.
When you've found a fingerprint, you may want to find details of the image creator. We've provided a simple, interactive database on the WorldWide Web so that you can obtain this information with the minimum of hassle and at any time you choose. Here's our address:
